Simply not good enough

Posted by Tamesider on September 27, 2009 at 12:07 PM

Following our exit from the FA Cup at Chorley yesterday manager Danny Johnson told the clubs website of his disappointment of yet again failing in an FA Competition. The manager was far from happy with the majority of his team and told of his dissatisfaction of what he said was a ‘disgusting’ performance that lacked desire, commitment and mental attitude.

Danny explains ‘I am embarrassed at the way my team conducted themselves yesterday and embarrassed to say I was manager of that team. It was disgusting, Chorley were there for the taking and how we contrived to lose the game is beyond me. I feel for the club as it was a fantastic opportunity for the players to put some money in to the bank but from a football point of view it was a great opportunity to get through to the next round. I’m afraid I have got too many players who think football is all about when we have the ball, too many ‘nicey, nice’ players, too many players who can’t think for themselves and unfortunately the balance of the team is all wrong’.

‘I can’t tell you how annoyed I am at the care free attitude some of my players adopted yesterday and mark my words I will be dealing with that in my own way. I won’t accept players hiding from taking responsibility or ignoring my instructions. What is the point of me highlighting to them the threat both Terry Fearns and Chris Amadi will cause us, if when they go out on to the pitch it is totally ignored? Totally and utterly not acceptable and some players might not like what will unfold but if they don’t then they are free to leave the football club’.

‘I want my players to play with freedom, pass the ball to feet and play with energy. At times yesterday some players were quite happy to just knock long balls in to no man’s land and be happy with that. Too many of them were relying on their teammates to do something which was apparent in the build up to their second goal when neither Ben Smith nor Iain Howard took responsibility to get on the ball in the middle of the park. Instead they allowed the Chorley midfield in and from the resulting corner Chorley got their second. Alex Frost was given the responsibility to pick up Terry Fearns from set pieces yet he some how managed to get a free header at goal. I won’t accept that and although we have done exceptionally well so far this season I think I will be making four or five changes to the team when we play Ossett Town next Saturday’.

‘It’s all very well lapping up the praise and the rewards for winning football matches but now we are in a position where the next four or five games will well and truly shape our season. It is time for my players to stand up and be counted, not run and hide from the fact that we have been beaten two games on the bounce. I can take losing, not a problem whatsoever but I can’t take losing in the manner we did yesterday. Chorley were to be quite frank a very poor side and reliant on two or three players to win them the game, if we can’t deal with that then I have to seriously consider the personnel I have at this football club. I will find out so much about certain players over the next few weeks and I for one hope I find out lots of positives’.

That's the kind of attitude that gets you nowhere. You have to respect your opposition and know when you're beaten and if they can't do that, then they dont deserve to get anything through the season. Sour grapes indeed Mr Johnson, we wish you all the bad luck that comes your way.

Its the kind of attitude that recognises we weren't good enough on the day and we know we can be much, much better, and should have been. With all due respect, although you were the better team on the day we would quite rightly expect to go to a mid table side from the division below and win. In the end that didn't happen but we only have ourselves to blame as the manager has said. It was an awful game and we have seen some for superior performances to that this season. We will bounce back mark my words.

Whilst we are focussing on managers, it was Steve Waywell who started any ill feeling by (completely incorrectly) stating in the NLD that we put 7 days notice on Chris Amadi just to unsettle his team before the game. The 7 days was put before the draw was even made, so unless Ashton United FC have either a crystal ball or a time machine I'm not sure what Mr Waywell was trying to achieve.

Shows what you knw WTF.A manager is only as good as his players, not the other way around. As you go up the levels which you will struggle to do with the players you have, you need better players & I am sure Mr Waywell would accept that he will need better players if you were to be serious play off contenders. I disagree with Ashton fan as I thought we were the better footballing side throughout. We passed the ball better and had we taken a couple of the numerous chances we had in the 1st half we would have won the game quite easily, I cant recall Chorley ahving any of the play apart from the odd break here and there. I have seen 7 games this season and Chorley were by far the worst team I have seen this season. Come on AUFC

I dnt understand why Chorley fans are gettin so cranky unless the actually believe there is a great amount of truth in wht our manager has said, which I think he is spot on. I also cant remember Chorley playin any football and relied heavily on their 2 fwds and their keeper was my MOM. Fact: Danny Johnson is the brightest young manager in the Unibond and knws what he is talking about. Chorley won, uv got the cash in the bank but take ur black and white specs off, ur team arent good enough. Anyone can beat anyone in a one off game, thats what happened. Good luck at Northwich and the best of luck with ur relegation fight. James

At the end of the day, Chorley won their cup final and good luck to them in the next round, but when reality returns we will be pushing for promotion in the premier division whilst they will have their annual battle against relegation from the first division. For all people talk about cup runs defining success it is actually your league standing that tells the real story.

I went to Droylsden v Halifax on Saturday and what a good game that was! I too do not understand the Chorley supporters. Danny Johnsons comments are above board and his opinion. Where did 'Sour Grapes' or 'A poor workman blames his tools' come from! Any manager not happy with his players replaces them and any good manager (and Danny Johnson definitely comes into that catagory) will have an inquest into why his team were defeated. If he didnt do that then I think his directors would be asking questions of him. Like a previous message says, anyone can beat anyone in a one off game and after watching you at Curzon I think Mr Waywell wil need a magic wand and not just £4500 to help you avoid relegation. MG

Not all doom and gloom but the manager quite rightly expected better on the day. We know we let ourselves down and we also know with the character in the squad that we will bounce back. Ashton United and the FA cup just don't seem to get on!
